Man runs stop sign, crashes through end of mobile home
030707 DRUNK ACCIDENT 1
Chris Shuman sorts through the rubble of his residence near the intersection of Harville and Josh Deal Roads Wednesday afternoon after an allegedly drunk driver plowed through a bedroom of the home early in the morning.
A loud crashing noise just after 4 a.m. Wednesday woke Chris Shuman up from a sound sleep. When his feet hit the floor of his  mobile home he noticed the floor was tilted. Trophy deer and bass were knocked off his living room wall, and the entire home was awry.
    Tornado? No. Truck.
A man whom law enforcement said was intoxicated ran a stop sign, left the roadway and struck Shuman's mobile home.
Georgia State Patrol Post commander Sgt. First-Class Christopher Wright responded to the scene Wednesday morning to investigate the crash after Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies initially responded.
He found where Russell C. Daughtry, 28, Ellis Wood Road, ran a stop sign, sailed across a ditch, splintered sign posts and took out the entire end of Shuman's home before crashing into some brush several yards away.
Daughtry was traveling on Burkhalter Road around 4 a.m., approaching Harville Road at the intersection of Josh Deal Road, when he apparently failed to stop at the stop sign, said Trooper First-Class J. B. Hodges, quoting information from Wright's report.
Daughtry's 2004 Chevrolet truck hurtled through the intersection, over a ditch, striking a sign before landing in Shuman's yard. Still moving forward, the truck struck the mobile home with enough force to obliterate the end bedroom, splintering two-by-fours, shattering the vinyl siding, scraping the carpet from the floor and shoving a bed through the far wall.
The home was knocked off its block foundation. Shrubs and a satellite dish were destroyed, and Daughtry's truck continued across the yard until he crashed into some bushes and woods.
Shuman said he knew what had happened as soon as he got out of bed and noticed the floor of the home slanting to one side.
"I heard a big crash and came out here and you see what you see," he said, pointing at the destruction.
He said Daughtry was walking around the yard and asked to use a  telephone. "He didn't ask if anyone was hurt."
Shuman noticed Daughtry was wearing a wristband and asked about it. "He said he had been at (a Statesboro bar)."
Realizing Daughtry may be intoxicated, Shuman told him to remain beside his truck while he called authorities. When Wright arrived, he administered an alcohol breath test and Daughtry registered .114, according to reports.
Daughtry was charged with DUI and failure to stop at a stop sign. He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he later posted bond, according to jail records.
Fortunately, no one was staying in the end bedroom, Shuman said.
The home belongs to his sister, Jamie R. Curnkelton, who just moved with her family a few months ago before Shuman moved into the home.
"That was where my nephew slept," he said, pointing to the remains of the bedroom.
The mobile home's frame is bent and Shuman said it won't be repairable. Wednesday afternoon he worked to remove his belongings, as there was no way to secure the home due to the extensive damage.
Daughtry was not able to be located for comment.
