A man shot Sunday at Blakewoods Apartments on East Olliff Street in Statesboro is in stable condition while the man who fired the shots is in jail.

Statesboro police were called to the scene Sunday around 8 p.m. for reports of shots fired and found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound, said Madison Warren, Statesboro Police community information specialist.

Officers determined Perry Leland Cooper, 32, “fired off several rounds at Blakewoods Apartments near the playground,” she said. “He hit someone.”

The adult victim was first taken to East Georgia Regional Medical center, then transported to Memorial Hospital in Savannah, she said.

Warren said detectives handling the case said the incident does not appear to be drug related, but did not give details as to what may have instigated the apparent conflict that led to the shooting.

No additional information about the incident was available, as it is still being ‘actively investigated,” she said.

Cooper, of Sandy Way, was charged with reckless conduct and aggravated assault. He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remains without bond, according to jail records.
