Editor:
It is my privilege to provide you with a brief report of recent activities of the Statesboro division of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service. The Statesboro office, which is located at 3A West Altman Street, serves Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, Evans, Jenkins and Screven counties with an estimated total veteran population of 14,635.
Our department provides free representation and advice to beneficiaries regarding all state and federal veterans' benefits, as well as assisting in filing the applications. The necessity for personal assistance to eligible beneficiaries filing and pursuing claims with the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs results from the legal principle that no veterans' benefits are awarded automatically. All benefits to which a veteran may be entitled must be applied for.
This past year our office filed 6,029 federal and state claims for the area beneficiaries. In addition, most recent data (FY 2008) from the Department of Veterans Affairs shows $36,524,000 from various benefits come into our area counties. Many of these veterans, their dependents and survivors enjoy more fulfilling lives due to receiving these monetary benefits.
In conclusion, our veterans gave much in the defense of our great nation and we must all continue to work together to make sure their sacrifices are not forgotten. Your confidence and support of this office and the Georgia Department of Veterans Service is sincerely appreciated.
