Parkwood RV Park and Cottages held a dedication ceremony Wednesday for its newly renovated property – helped in part by a grant from Keep Bulloch Beautiful.
The renovations include improvements to the exterior and interior of the main building, which will serve as center for business meetings and special events. The work on the building was helped by a $10,000 grant from Keep Bulloch Beautiful. The grant is part of an incentive program launched by KBB in 2006 to encourage business owners along some of Bulloch County’s main corridors to improve their properties.
“Attractive entranceways are a benefit to every member of our community through enhanced economic development, improved quality of life, and increased community pride,” said Brooke B. Carney, Keep Bulloch Beautiful's director.
Parkwood is owned by Harry and Lisa Wachniak, and the RV park has been owned by the Wachniak family since 1961.
Many who stay at the RV park and several in the local business community have high praise for what the Wachniaks have been able to do with the park since returning to Statesboro in 1997.
"They have been very successful with it," said Darren Burnett, senior vice president of the Sea Island Bank in Statesboro. "They have done a great job of preserving a piece of local history by not only sprucing up and updating it, but also renovating the original building that held the restaurant."
The Highway Beautification program was developed by KBB to help improve commercial properties along Highway 67 and Highway 301 South. It consists of a Highway Beautification Master Plan and a matching grant program.
The master plan includes sample landscaping plans and façade recommendations, available from KBB. Business owners are encouraged to use these examples in planning property improvement projects. The plans were developed by a landscape architect and an architect using model sites along the highways as examples. The grant program offers matching funds up to 40 percent of the total project cost.
"The goal of the program is to give business owners the tools they need to complete property improvement projects,” said Jimmy High, KBB's president. “We all want the entrance to our community to be attractive. It’s a positive situation for everyone involved.”
Parkwood is currently the only business that has taken advantage of the matching grant program. More funds are available and Keep Bulloch Beautiful is now accepting grant applications.
