Social media played a part in locating an elderly man missing for three hours Wednesday. He was found safely in Screven County, said Bulloch County sheriff’s Investigator Jared Akins.
Robert Alan Thompson, 83, of Bohler-Rimes Road, who has mild Alzheimer’s disease, left his home around 2:20 p.m. in a white 1993 Ford F-150 with a full tank of gas.
Concerned family members contacted Bulloch County sheriff’s deputies, who immediately issued a lookout “using news media, Nixle text alerts and Facebook,” Akins said.
A woman who saw the alerts on Facebook spotted Thompson’s truck in Screven County.
“Approximately three hours later, at 5:15 p.m., Hayley Moore of Statesboro recognized Mr. Thompson’s vehicle traveling on U.S. 301 North in Screven County,” Akins said. “Ms. Moore had seen the lookout on Facebook and immediately notified Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office dispatch.”
Deputies stopped Thompson near the Screven/Bulloch county line and “reunited him safely with his family,” Akins said. “Sheriff Lynn Anderson would like to thank local news media for their coverage, and Ms. Moore for reading the BOLO (be on the lookout alert) and immediately contacting law enforcement when she sighted Mr. Thompson’s vehicle.”
