A man found dead in a swimming pool Thursday drowned accidentally, said Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch.
However, the body of Eric Daniel Hopkins, 27, Dodd Circle, was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Crime Lab in Savannah for an autopsy, said Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner.
Hopkins, a Georgia Southern University student from Cairo, had been swimming with friends in a pool at a Greenwood Drive residence early Thursday morning around 1:20 a.m., he said.
“His friends left and went inside the residence,” he said. “When they returned they found Hopkins unresponsive in the pool.”
Someone who lived at the home removed Hopkins from the pool while someone called authorities. Statesboro Police   Kyle Smalligan and Bulloch County EMS personnel attempted to resuscitate Hopkins, but were unsuccessful, he said.
“The case is currently under investigation; however, at this time there is no evidence to indicate any foul play surrounding the death,” he said.
Further details that could possibly shed light on reasons for the accidental drowning will be available after toxicology and other results are returned, Futch said.
