SEB drops 37-13 game to Mustangs
SEB

BROOKLET - Leading up to Friday night's game, Southeast Bulloch Head Coach Pat Collins stressed consistency in practice as the Yellow Jackets prepared to face Class AAAAA opponent South Effingham High School.

Unfortunately for SEB, an AAA school, they did not play with consistency as they fell to the Mustangs 37-13 at Fred Shaver Field.

"We needed better preparation," Collins said, "and that's coaches and players."

After holding SEB (0-2) to a three and out on their first possession, South Effingham (2-0) marched 68 yards on five plays capped off with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Timothy Signal to put the Mustangs up 6-0.

The Yellow Jackets answered later in the first quarter on a five play drive covering 34 yards culminating with a two-yard plunge by Chase Walker. Andrew Cribbs' extra point gave SEB a 7-0 lead they would maintain until the early in the second period.

From there, the Mustangs scored 10 unanswered points in the second as SEB struggled offensively to get anything going.

"We were not able to establish our running game and when we can't do that it spells trouble for us."

The Yellow Jackets were only able to muster 61 yards of total offense in the first half.

After giving up a touchdown early in the second half, the Yellow Jackets caught a lucky break. Facing a second and 14, quarterback Jaylon Wells dropped back to pass and threw into double coverage. However, the two Mustang defenders each went for the ball, tipping it into the hands of Klayton Carter who easily ran to the endzone to pull the Yellow Jackets to 23-13.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, with SEB driving, senior Michael Davis lost a fumble on the Mustangs 27. Five plays later, Patrick Brown found the end zone to put South Effingham up 30-13.

The Mustangs added a late touchdown to cap off the scoring.

"You have to give them credit. They're a really good team and they beat us tonight" Collins said. "We just have things we have to fix. Last week we had two penalties. Tonight, we had eight. We can't turn the ball over."

Southeast Bulloch rushed for 123 yards on the night and 92 yards passing. Davis led the rushing attack with 61 yards while Walker added 57.

South Effingham, meanwhile, used their dominant rushing attack of 329 yards to control the game. Brown ran for 194 yards, including two runs of more than 50 yards. Tyler Pullum passed for 194 yards and one touchdown to lead the Mustangs.

The Yellow Jackets will now turn their attention to Bryan County and will look to correct the issues from the first two weeks.

"Consistency comes from practice and preparation. We have to do a better job in practice."
