AMERICUS – Big plays helped Southland Academy run away with a 37-7 victory over Bulloch Academy in a key GISA Region 1-AAA battle here Friday night.

The Raiders had scoring runs of 76, 52 and 52 yards and a 65-yard pass play for a touchdown as their size and depth prevailed against the smaller, banged-up Gators.

Southland (7-3 overall and 3-1 in region play) held Bulloch to just 83 yards on the ground at soggy Harvey Simpson Stadium. The Gators (3-6, 0-4) had just five first downs on the night.

Bulloch’s defense held firm for most of the night against the larger Raiders. BA’s G.C. Kimbrell, Andrew Howell and Dylan Stuckey led the charge. But it only took one missed tackle or one misread for the speedy Southland runners to escape and race to the end zone. Southland used a variety of traps, blasts and misdirection plays to keep the Gators off balance.

Senior Allen Greeson touched the ball three times, but one was for a 52-yard dash at the 7:23 mark of the opening quarter. Junior Colt Stephens had just four carries, with one being a 76-yard sprint up the middle for a score. Senior Dustin Shattles caught just one pass, but it turned into a 65-yard scoring play.

SA’s senior-laden squad dominated on both sides of the ball but the Gators didn’t quit. With the Raiders holding a 28-0 lead early in the second half, Bulloch mounted a 10-play, 66-yard drive behind sophomore quarterback Lanier Olliff. The young gun completed two passes for 41 yards to senior Will Rushing in the drive, including a 28-yard diving catch to the SA eight-yard line. Three plays later, Olliff plunged in for the BA score at the 1:56 mark of the third.

But the Raiders came right back on the next series. Senior Jon Adkins found a seam in the middle of the Gator defense and ripped off a 52-yard run for a 35-7 lead with 24 seconds left in the quarter.

Late in the third and early in the fourth, frustration reared its ugly head as personal fouls caused yellow flags to litter the field. But order was restored as Gator and Raider players calmed down to finish the game.
