Raven Thomas stole the show, qualifying for state in four different events and earning the high-point honors at the Region 2-AAAA track and field meet Saturday at Statesboro High.
In addition to running on Statesboro’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams – both took first place - Thomas won individual region championships in both the 200 meter dash and 400 meter dash. Especially impressive was Thomas’ time in the 400 meters. She finished in just 58.14 seconds and was the only runner to break the one-minute mark as she came in 2.2 seconds ahead of fellow Blue Devil Heather Wasdin.
“I really want to thank my teammates,” said Thomas. “I really spent a lot of energy (Friday) in the preliminaries and wasn’t feeling great. The weather was tough to deal with too, but my teammates were really supportive and kept pushing me to do better.”
Her teammates weren’t far behind.
Statesboro dominated the team competition, winning the region title by a huge 54 point margin. In all, Lady Devils claimed 17 qualifying spots for the state meet, which will take place next weekend in Albany.
