Athlete of the Week: Rollins a force on special teams

Haydon Rollins, Statesboro senior defensive back

Haydon Rollins is all over the field for Statesboro. He consistently locks down the top receivers of opponents and is one of the biggest impact special teams players in the state.
Still, there is one thing he has to endure from his teammates.
“They always get on me for not scoring,” said Rollins. “I haven’t heard the end of it.”
Of course, the good-natured ribbing of his teammates and coaches wouldn’t even come to their minds if Rollins – who doesn’t play on offense – didn’t use his talents to get his hands on the ball so often.
Rollins has four interceptions on the season and has gotten a hand on four more kicks and is one of the main reasons the Blue Devils are sitting at 9-0 this season. Last week, Rollins blocked two more punts, including one that was recovered for a Statesboro touchdown. But as has been the trend, it was another Devil reaping the rewards of Rollins’ stellar play.
Rollins will get one of his biggest tests of the season as SHS takes on the high-flying offense of Ware County this week in the Region 2-AAAA championship game.
