Local Roundup - 300 high school athletes to compete at Gator Relays

Eleven years and stronger than ever.

That’s how Bulloch Academy athletic director and head track and field coach Clint Morgan sees today’s 11th annual Gator Relays.

  “It has become such a fun event,” said Morgan. “It’s gotten to be so popular that I’ve got coaches calling at the beginning of the school year wanting to know the date.”

            Hosted by Bulloch Academy, the all-classification meet will boast some of the best athletes in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA). Student-athletes representing over 20 independent schools from around the state will converge on Georgia Southern University’s state-of-the-art track and field facility.

In today’s meet, some of the premier female athletes will be Bulloch’s Sally Marie Futch in the discus (127) and Kelcie Jacobs in the 800-meter run (2:38), Gatewood’s Elizabeth Lacksen in the 3200m run (12:43) and 1600m run (5:41), Trinity Christian’s Sarah Howard in the shot put (47), Mount de Sales’ Jones in the long jump (16-4) and triple jump (34) and Dominion Christian’s Forde in the 100m hurdles (16) and 300m hurdles (47).

In the boys’ meet, some of the top athletes include Stratford Academy’s Strauss in the shot (44) and discus (125),  John Milledge’s Simpson in the 110m hurdles (15.9) and 300m hurdles (42.2), Mount de Sales’ Meyers in the 800m run (2:07) and Deerfield Windsor sprinter Zenon (11.1 in the 100m dash and a 23.1 in the 200).

Statesboro defeats Effingham

EFFINGHAM -- The Statesboro Blue Devils (5-3-1) (4-2 in region) defeated Effingham County High School Friday (3-1).

Chris Bowens scored 2 goals and Trent Doty scored one.

Davis Ball had 2 assists and Eric Quinterio had one.

The Blue Devils’ next game will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Wayne County.

 

Gators fall to Westminster

The Bulloch Academy Gators fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to best Westminster Friday. Despite the team’s best efforts and outstanding defense played by Blane Lovett, the Gators lost 1-0.

The Gators host Frederica on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

 

SEB bests Laney

AUGUSTA – The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets defeated Laney (15-8) on Friday.

Robert White was 2-for-5.

Jordan Davis was 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Jared Page was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Jared Page got the win pitching and JD Smith threw 3 innings of strong relief.

The Yellow Jackets host Jefferson on Tuesday.

 

Statesboro defeats Effingham

EFFINGHAM -- The Statesboro Lady Blue Devils (5-0) beat Effingham County (2-0) on Friday.

Taylor Sarratt scored first goal off of a penalty kick.

In the second half Laura Minick scored a goal. Caroline Coffey had the assist.

McKayla Patterson recorded a shutout.

McKayla Patterson had a shutout.

Claire Randall, Molly Couch and Kristen Reichard had strong defensive performances.

The Lady Blue Devils will play again Tuesday in Wayne County at 5 p.m.

 

Effingham disappointed by Blue Devils

EFFINGHAM – The Statesboro Lady Blue Devils Junior Varsity (6-1-0) defeated Effingham County Thursday (1-0).

Sabrina lux scored the game winning goal.

The JV will play at Wayne County at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
