The Georgia Southern football team wraps up spring practice Saturday at Paulson Stadium with the annual Blue/White Spring game at 11:30.
Coach Clay Helton and his staff have been busy this spring trying to fill plenty of holes left by graduation and the transfer portal, including replacing the entire offense.
Among the positions under the microscope this spring is quarterback where the Eagles are expected to start UNC transfer Max Johnson, while others in the mix include last year’s primary back up Weston Bryan and Helton’s son Turner, as well as redshirt freshman Charlie Johnson.
“You look at Max and he’s here for a reason as he has played a ton of football,” Helton said. “You see the poise he brings to the table and the playmaking ability. What I really like from practice one to number 11 which we are now is the way he has been able to improve on making checks within the system.”
“This is Turner’s fifth year within this system and you see his knowledge of what we expect,” Helton added. “From where Weston and Charlie started to where they are now, they are different players. They went from not even being able to call a play to running an offense. Harrison Faulkner reminds us a lot of what J.C. French brought to the table, which is arm talent and the ability to run along with no fear. I like where the quarterbacks are now and look forward to watching them in the spring game.”
As far as the defense under new defensive coordinator Mike Mutz, Helton has been impressed with the progress on that side of the ball, as well.
“The competitive level has been so high,” Helton said. “The advancement of our defense continues and being able to get those additional personnel that we needed and be able to create depth at all positions has been huge. Good teams are not just one-sided you see things continue to go back and forth and that’s the way this camp has been.”
Helton said he expects everyone to play in Saturday’s Blue/White game and says they will not release a depth chart until right before the first game of the season.
“All positions are up for grabs,” Helton said. “We usually set our depth chart the week before our first game. This time is for them to get better each and every day. The guy who is playing the best is going to walk out there and play and the guy that is right behind him will go second regardless of position. The beauty of college football is you gave 15 spring practices and 25 in the fall so there is still plenty of work to do and evaluation between now and the first game.”
