With some football coaches it’s tough to tell after a game whether they won or lost. Bulloch Academy is coming off a 28-20 win over Westside.

After the game, coach Aaron Phillips was more frustrated by what the Gators did wrong than what went right in the victory, but with some time to reflect, Phillips was feeling a little better this week.

“I told the coaches today that I need to start enjoying the wins, because they're hard to come by,” Phillips said. “Everybody is trying to work hard and I'm going to try and enjoy this, but there are some things that I would love to clean up. I thought we let Westfield stay in the ball game too long.

"There were a couple things I'd like to have back that we didn't execute at the highest level. We're going to try to move on and get better this week and continue to try to trend in the direction of playing our best football as we get towards the end of the season.”

One key behind the Gator’s win Friday was the continued emergence of running back Connor Perry as a real weapon. Perry led the team with 239 yards rushing and three touchdowns with an average of over 14 yards per carry.

“In eighth grade he had some of these moments where you could tell he was going to be special,” Phillips said. “He had to get rid of some slippery fingers with the ball when he had contact. He's done a really good job working hard in practice and trying to understand the playbook.

"He does a lot of things that you can't teach. He has really good vision and he's a great athlete who runs extremely well. He is deceptively fast and may be every bit as fast as Shamar Jenkins when he was here, at least on the football field.”

This week the Gators take their 4-1 record on the road to Lyons to take on Robert Toombs. The Crusaders lost a large senior class from last season and are struggling so far this year with a record of 0-5.

“They graduated a big group of kids last year and some went on play at the next level, “Phillips said. “One went to West Georgia and their quarterback transferred to Toombs County. Coach Spurlock is a longtime coach in Georgia having been at Ware County and Lincoln County.

"He's a guy that's been around GHSA and football for a long time and so they'll do things right. We should be able to go over there and execute and try to play clean and I think we can be successful.”

Bulloch Academy and Robert Toombs are set for a 7:30 start Friday in Lyons.
