Lady Eagles finish third in New Mexico
    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —Carolyn Whitney scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half as the Georgia Southern women’s basketball team defeated Western Illinois, 64-60, Saturday night, at the AmeriSuites Midtown Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by New Mexico.
    With the win, the Lady Eagles (2-5) snapped a five-game skid and garnered third place in the event.  Western Illinois fell to 1-4 on the season.
    On Friday, GSU lost to New Mexico 64-43.
    The Lady Eagles return back home to host South Alabama on Tuesday.  Tip-off at Hanner Fieldhouse is slated for 7 p.m.

Men’s team plays tonight
    The Georgia Southern men’s basketball team plays at Mercer tonight at 7 p.m.

Lady Dawgs win
    ATHENS — Cori Chambers scored 21 points and Ashley Houts made four free throws in the final 30 seconds as No. 8 Georgia held off No. 11 Stanford 74-69 on Sunday.
    Megan Darrah scored 15 points for No. 8 Georgia, which led by 14 points midway through the second half before Stanford (2-3) cut the lead to 68-67.

Armes takes Skins Game title
    LA QUINTA, Calif. — Skins Game rookie Stephen Ames rolled in a 3-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole Sunday for $270,000 that gave him the championship with a total of $590,000 in earnings.
    Fred Couples, who has won the Skins Game five times in 13 appearances, finished second with $385,000 to run his career Skins earnings to $3.9 million. Although he didn’t win this time, Couples played the best golf of the foursome, with 10 birdies and an eagle over 20 holes.

Bank of America joins with NASCAR
    CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Banking on NASCAR fans’ sponsor loyalty to drive more retail business to their ATMs and branches, Charlotte-based Bank of America Corp. has signed a five-year deal as the official bank of the popular racing series, rumored to be between $15 and $20 million.
    
Amato’s out at N.C. State
    N.C. State announced late Sunday that head football coach Chuck Amato would not return to the university next year.
