Although Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson called off Friday’s search for a fugitive suspect involved in a high speed chase spanning three-counties, deputies remained on patrol in the area throughout the night Friday watching for the suspect.
After a crash near Statesboro in the area of Rolling Woods subdivision, a man fled the scene, but the woman who drove from Burke County through Jenkins into Bulloch at speeds approaching 130 miles per hour, Travyna Denise Brown, 21, Columbus, Ohio, was captured at the scene of the crash, he said.
Georgia State Patrol Post 21 Sgt. Chris Rodewalt tried to stop the car Brown was driving in Burke County before noon Friday because she was speeding, he said. Brown didn’t stop, but fled, going into Jenkins County.
That’s where Jenkins County Sheriff’s deputies, including Sheriff Robert Oglesby, joined the chase. The pursuit continued on Hwy. 25, often on the wrong side of the divided four-lane highway, into Bulloch County, where Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies, Post 45 Georgia State Patrol troopers, and others took part in the action, he said.
Brown and an unidentified male passenger, who is still being sought, crashed on Highway 80 (Ga. 25) around 12:30 p.m., Anderson said.
Effingham County K-9 units and the Georgia State Patrol helicopter assisted in the pursuit of the man, who fled on foot after the crash and was last seen wearing a white tee shirt and carrying a white backpack. He is a black male and stands about 5:19, he said.
William James Middle School was on soft lockdown, meaning students were kept inside classrooms but parents were allowed to come in and pick their children up, said Bulloch County Board of Education spokesperson Hayley Greene. School was dismissed a 3:30 p.m., normal time, and several sheriff’s deputies were on campus, having declared the dismissal safe, she said.
While sheriff’s deputies said during radio traffic the suspect has a criminal history and is believed to have a gun, Anderson has not yet released his identity.
Brown is being held in the Bulloch County Jail, charged buy the Georgia State Patrol with felony fleeing/attempt to elude, no proof of insurance, driving while unlicensed, seat belt violation, driving on the wrong side of the road, passing in a no passing zone, failure to maintain lane, and reckless driving. Further charges are possible.
Agents from the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, Statesboro Police, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and other agencies assisted in the chase and search.
No one was injured, Anderson said.
