Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents are looking into details surrounding Wednesday's arrest of a 26-year-old female Metter High School paraprofessional charged with inappropriate conduct with an 18-year-old male student.
Brianna Streetmon, 26, of Salem Church Road in Metter, was arrested Wednesday morning after GBI agents investigated a complaint of Streetmon's illicit involvement with a student, said Statesboro GBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Cyrus Purdiman.
According to reports, Streetmon works in special education and is an assistant softball coach. Purdiman said GBI is not releasing details of the incident, including the student's age and sex.
Candler County School Superintendent Dr. Tom Bigwood said the student is an 18-year-old male. Despite the student being legally an adult, Georgia law prohibits sexual contact between a teacher and student of any age.
Streetmon was placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed, Metter High School Assistant Principal Ellis Strobridge said Thursday.
As for the investigation, "We are letting the authorities handle that," he said, adding that the school is cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation.
Candler County Sheriff Homer Bell did not return phone calls Thursday seeking comment. Purdiman said the Candler County Sheriff's Office asked the GBI for assistance in the investigation. The Candler County Jail would not release a photo of Streetmon Thursday, with jail officials stating Bell is the only person with authority to do so.
