Creating fun for the final days of summer

Newly-sharpened pencils, unbroken crayons and yellow busses rumbling down the street signify the beginning of a new season, but technically, summer isn’t over yet. Thanks to the calendar, summer hangs around for several additional weeks.

And here in the Boro, temperatures support summer status for sure. In keeping with the calendar, continue to enjoy summer activities with the ones you love this month and make fun, family memories. Include some of the wacky, zany holidays below to add August adventures to the remaining days of summer.

Peach Month – Enjoy making these Jelly Filled Cookies with the family and add a sweet peach touch to each one. Soften three sticks of butter. Cream softened butter with one cup of sugar. Add one egg, one teaspoon vanilla and four cups of all-purpose flour. Blend well. Roll dough into small marble-sized balls. Press gently in the center of each dough ball. Fill indention with peach preserves. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, until lightly golden brown.

International Tree Climbing Days – When’s the last time you climbed a tree with the kiddos? Find one to climb today and try another one tomorrow. Then read some of these fun books together as a family. Try: Tell Me, Tree by Gail Gibbons; The Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry; Someday a Tree by Even Bunting; This is the Tree by Miriam Moss; The Busy Beaver by Nocholas Oldland; Who Will Plant a Tree by Jerry Pallotta; A Log’s Life by Wendy Pfeffer; Curious George Plants a Tree by H.A. Rey; We Planted a Tree by Diane E. Muldrow and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.

National Coloring Book Day – Purchase a new coloring book for each person in the family or buy one to share pages from. You might want to pick a theme that fits each family member. Buy some new crayons to enjoy for the family adventure and buy a couple of extra packages to donate to a school or classroom, too. Pick an evening to color together, side by side at the kitchen table. Talk, share and color the evening away. For extra fun, display favorite pictures on the fridge with magnets or use painters’ tape to hang the masterpieces on the wall.

Wiggle Your Toes Day – In the remaining days of summer, plan several toe-wiggling events. Walk barefoot in the grass in the backyard. Visit the beach another time and wiggle your toes in the sand. Dance in the refreshment of front yard sprinklers. And if it ever rains again in the Boro, wiggle your toes in the mud.

Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day – Well, this has to be one of the most bizarre holidays ever created, but … get creative and enjoy the day with your family. Buy enoy zucchini to make a casserole for your family and include extra to share with a neighbor. Maybe sneaking onto their porch isn’t the best decision, but you can deliver a bag of fresh zucchini to a neighbor after a quick phone call.

Make cool memories with the family on the remaining warm – or more accurately, really hot – summer days and enjoy August with the ones you love. Though school bells have chimed, continue making summer memories and thank the official calendar for the opportunity to do so. Get outside often, plan extra water activities, cool off with lemonade on the front porch and enjoy every moment with the family.
