Members of the 165th Air Support Operations Squadron, 224th Joint Communications Support Squadron Georgia Air National Guard demonstrated their unit’s capability to provide worldwide communications support to the Army JROTC cadets at Southeast Bulloch High School.
Using their latest equipment, they are able to place phone calls anywhere in the world. Their calls can be broadcast in the clear or enciphered to provide secure communications.
Master Sergeant Thomas Naldrett and his two-man team were able to unload their equipment from their truck and have it set up and running in 30 minutes. Their quick reaction and set up time is what is required to support military combat operations. Their unit has deployed to Iraq several times for 90-day tours to support military operations.
The Jacket Battalion cadets were able to learn and see how the system works. They were able to place phone calls to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait.
MSgt. Naldrett plans to bring his team back in March so that any student in the high school and middle school that have a close relative — mother, father, brother, sister — serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or Kuwait would have an opportunity to call them.
The 224th, home-based out of Brunswick, consists of 175 personnel that are configured into six man teams to provide this state of the art communication system. They can also provide video conferencing communications world wide along with Internet support.
Those who elect to join the Air Guard to serve in this unit currently receive a $15,000 enlistment bonus.
Master Sgt. Naldrett indicated that there are several positions available for new recruits. Any high school graduate age 17-35 interested can contact Tech. Sgt. Steve Livingston at (912) 261-5604 or 1-800-743-9231.
