Portal’s history will come alive this weekend as the folk-life drama, “Between Hopeulikit and Piddleville: Portal Celebrates 100,” will be held at the Portal Elementary School auditorium.
Portal students will be the first to view the play Friday, but anyone with a ticket can enjoy the performance Saturday, March 1, from 7-9 p.m. in the school auditorium, said project spokesperson Luree Bowen.
The play will be presented again Saturday, March 8 from 7-9 p.m. in the same location.
The celebratory play is directed by Mical Whitaker. However, as he is directing two plays concurrently, assistant director Jane Rocker will be directing the cast of more than 75 actors, singers and musicians, she said.
Admission is $3, and advance tickets will be sold at Portal City Hall and Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce.
“Each performance will have its own color for tickets to avoid overselling for either performance,” she said. “There will be 475 tickets color coded for each performance. We will also have tickets for sale at the door for both performances.”
Those attending the performances will also be able to take home a souvenir booklet.
“We have worked long hours in our attempt to complete the 44-page drama souvenir booklet available with lots of photos at a price of $3 each,” Bowen said. “Again, because we have grant money to defray some of the costs, both the admission fee and the souvenir booklet will be very reasonably priced at $3 each.”
The cast is comprised of local residents and the play will reflect important aspects of the northwestern Bulloch County town, which is known for its rich agricultural history including turpentine production. Portal hosts an annual event, the Catface Country Turpentine Festival, in the fall.
