SEB faces road test at Calvary Day

Coming off an impressive 43-7 win in their region opener to improve to 2-0 on the season, you could be forgiven if you thought Southeast Bulloch’s film session would highlight the things they did correctly.

And while SEB Head Coach Jared Zito and his staff certainly did mention the positives, they also nitpicked the little things that need to be corrected for this year’s Yellow Jacket team to reach their full potential.

“We played well and we played hard,” Zito said. “But there’s always room for improvement. We’re hard on these guys because we have a lot of expectations and we know how good they can be.”

The Yellow Jackets will hit the road for the first time in 2024 as they travel to face Calvary Day in a game SEB Head Coach Jared Zito said will be a good test for his team.

Last year, the Cavaliers went 10-0 in the regular season before falling in the semifinals. They’ve started out 1-1 this year, defeating Beach in their season opener before falling 16-15 to Oceanside Collegiate Academy out of Mt. Pleasant, SC, last week.

“They’re a great challenge for us,” said Zito. “They’re a good team with good players.”

The Cavaliers are led by their sophomore quarterback James Mobley who is averaging nearly 200 yards a game through the air in their two games. He directs the shotgun spread offense and his top target is wide receiver Thomas Blackshear who has ten catches and a touchdown on the season.

Calvary Day’s ground attack is led by Caden Jones who ran for 127 yards and a touchdown against Oceanside.

The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, will rely on their ground attack led by the three-headed monster of Colby Smith, Jayden Murphy and Quentin Reed. That trio has combined for 479 yards and six touchdowns through two games.

Zito said the Yellow Jackets must protect the ball on offense and not have any turnovers if they expect to win Friday night.

“If you want to be the top team in the region, Calvary is the team you have to beat,” Zito said.

This is the first time since 2021 that SEB has started the season undefeated after two games.

“Being 2-0 is great, but it’s a long season,” Zito said. “We’re trying to get better each week so that we’re playing our best football at the end of the season.

Kickoff for Southeast Bulloch and Calvary Day is Friday at 7:30 in Savannah.
