The Bulloch Academy Gators opened the season with a 44-6 win over Pinewood. This week head coach Aaron Phillips hopes his team takes another step forward as they Gators host Brentwood Friday at 7:30.
“We had too many penalties Friday and that is something that really needs to improve this week,” Phillips said. “A few of those cancelled out touchdowns and we can’t do that against really good teams and expect to win. We had miscues and assignment issues on defense that I’d like to see us improve but overall, I liked the way we played defense. We improved a lot from last year on defense and I think that comes with experience and being a year older.”
One thing Phillips was particularly pleased with was the depth of his offense evident in the Gators having six different players score a touchdown and rushing for over 300 yards total in the game.
“Any time you get that kind of balanced attack other teams don’t know who to key on, “Phillips said.” We also threw the ball well with over 70 yards passing. What that does too is keep defenses honest and guessing. I thought our offensive line did a great job as well.”
This week the Gators go up against a Brentwood team who got beat 31-7 last week by John Mlledge but have a few home run threats on offense that concern Phillips.
“The score last week against their rival doesn’t really tell the true story of that team. Brentwood had four guys who are being recruited by colleges to play football. Their running back Tristan Robinson has already committed to North Carolina and he weighs over 200 pounds. They also have a receiver who is really fast as well as an athletic quarterback. We have to limit the big plays this week even more than last week. This will be a challenging game for us.”
