The Statesboro Blue Devils dropped their first games of the season in the past two weeks, falling to Benedictine, 42-21, and Ware County, 42-14. In the Benedictine game, the offense was able to put up over 400 yards including 275 yards passing by quarterback Beckham Jarrad, who threw for two touchdowns and rushed for 35 yards and another score.

“We finally got some decent weather and a healthy Beckham showed what he is capable of doing,” said coach Matt Dobson. “Beckham had a good night throwing the ball but he also showed how he is a run threat too rushing for 35 yards and a touchdown.

“I think he is continuing to grow in learning the offense and is becoming more comfortable with his receivers which will really help us the rest of the year.”

“Even though we lost the game Friday, I think we did some good things and showed what a powerful offense we can have,” Jarrard said. “Adversity can be a good thing, especially if you learn from it. I think there are things we can improve on both sides of the ball and we are working on that this week.

“I feel healthy and I think we finally got a chance to show what we can do throwing the ball and hopefully we can keep running the ball too to keep other teams off balance.”
