LYONS — Three hours, 77 points and 921 yards of total offense.
No, it wasn’t an NFL or collegiate, no-defense, score-fest but a regional rivalry in the Georgia Independent School Association.
Bulloch Academy and Robert Toombs Christian Academy slugged it out in an epic battle at McLendon Field Friday night.
The Crusaders outlasted the Gators 43-34 behind a Herculean performance from senior running back Rico Rogers, who rushed for an amazing 384 yards and five touchdowns. Rogers scored on runs of 80, 45, 20, 5 and 2 yards as RTCA (3-0) had a hard time with the scrappy Gators.
The Bulloch Academy Gators (2-1) came into the game as huge underdogs but used a powerful wishbone, no-huddle offense to stay in contention until the last minutes of the fourth quarter.
BA quarterback Lanier Olliff threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers, and Will Rushing scampered 20 yards for another score. Bulloch kept the game close, but the Gators’ inability to score extra points was their downfall. BA converted just 2-of-5 attempts.
The Crusaders scored on their first series of the game when Drew Todd bulled in from 1 yard out at the 7:55 mark of the first quarter.
The Gators answered back on a 10-play, 82-yard drive that culminated in a 15-yard scoring strike from Lanier to Davis Childs. Andrew Howell (13-for-98) had the big play of the drive, breaking loose off tackle for a 21-yard dash. The extra point failed, leaving the Gators trailing 7-6.
A 46-yard dash by Rogers on Robert Toombs' next possession set up the second Crusader score and his two-point plunge gave the home team a 15-6 lead. But BA cut the score to 15-14, early in the second quarter on a Will Rushing 20-yard dash and Howell’s 2-point run.
Rogers broke off his 45-yard run early in the third for a 22-14 lead, but the Gators rallied back. Olliff’s second TD, a 3-yarder to Dylan Humphries, cut the score to 22-20. But, once again, a missed extra-point attempt kept the Gators from tying the score.
RTCA went up 29-20 on Roger’s third TD of the night with 3:18 left in the third.
The Crusaders broke the Gators' backs in the fourth when Rogers shook loose from would-be tacklers and won an 80-yard foot race for a 36-20 lead at the 5:34 mark.
Still, Bulloch wouldn’t quit as Olliff threw two more TD passes, but a late RTCA score nailed the coffin shut for the Gators, who lost for the first time this season.
