Athlete of the Week: SEB's Gates does it all

When the Lady Yellow Jackets of Southeast Bulloch open up today’s Region 3-AA track and field championships, a freshman will be looking to leave her mark in a number of events.

Breanna Gates has starred for SEB in numerous sprints and has already qualified for the state meet in her favorite event – the long jump.

“As a freshman, I didn’t expect to compete with older girls as well as I have,” said Gates. “Now I’m confident. I jumped 17 feet-3 inches earlier, so hopefully I can come close to that again in the region meet.”

While she is the top seed in the region for the long jump, Gates will also be a key member of SEB’s talented relay teams. Both the 4x100 and 4x400 teams have turned in great times all season and have qualified for the region finals.

“We work hard every day on the relays,” said Gates. “We make sure that we have all of our handoffs down. If we just do everything like we’ve practiced, I think the whole team can do really well and make it to state.”

The Jackets finished the region preliminaries with only Bleckley County ahead of them in team points.

Finals for all events will be held this afternoon in Brooklet.
