Erick Quiterio knows how to finish with a bang.
Playing in what was likely his final game at Womack Field Tuesday night, the senior forward scored a pair of goals en route to a 4-2 Statesboro victory over Effingham County.
“It was a great feeling to get those goals on Senior Night,” said Quiterio. “I haven’t scored a whole lot this season, so that was a great motivator heading into the playoffs.”
With the Blue Devils already leading 1-0, a loose ball in the Effingham box found Quiterio, who drilled it into the back of the net. Just eight minutes later, a shot rebounded off the Rebel goalkeeper, and Quiterio was again able to capitalize on the opportunity and put it away.
With the win, Statesboro clinched the No. 3 seed out of Region 2-AAAA and will travel to Evans (Region 3-AAAA No. 2 seed) next week for the first round of the GHSA state playoffs.
“We haven’t done quite as well as we planned, but we’re playing really well right now,” said Quiterio. “Now, we’re working together much better. That has allowed us to be a little more effective on offense and defense. Now we just need to keep it going.”
