With Georgia Southern’s Sept. 8 season opener rapidly approaching, Eagle football fans will have a chance to meet the 2007 team this Saturday at Paulson Stadium.
The day will begin with a free Little Eagle camp for children and be followed by the annual Meet the Eagles day.
“It’s going to be a great time,” said first-year coach Chris Hatcher, who took over in January. “I’ve done it before at Valdosta, and I don’t know who has more fun – our players or the little kids.”
The Little Eagles camp, scheduled from 9-11 a.m., is open to kids ages 5-12. Registration will be from 9-9:30 a.m., and festivities will include running on the field with the banner. Participants must enter the gates nearest the Bishop Field House. Seating on the home side of the stadium is off limits due to construction, but the visitors section will be open.
Beginning at 11 a.m., fans can meet the Eagles inside the Bishop Field House where the entire team will be available for autographs along with GUS the Eagle, cheerleaders and the Chick-fil-A cow. Pocket schedules and the annual team poster will be available, as will Chick-fil-A coupons and sandwiches for kids.
Hatcher said the ultimate goal for Saturday is to have community interaction and give youngsters a positive impression of Georgia Southern.
“We want all the little kids in the community to grow up and want to be Eagles,” he said. “We understand that some of these guys who have been around a long time grew up Georgia Bulldog fans, and that’s OK, but we want the little guys to want to be Eagles and talk their mommas and daddies into bringing them to Paulson Stadium every Saturday.”
Season tickets, jerseys, football media guides and bobblehead dolls will be for sale, and Southern Boosters information packets will be available. The Georgia Southern Radio Network will also have a live remote at Paulson from 10 a.m. until noon.
Under Hatcher, the Eagles are looking to rebound from last year’s 3-8 season. Georgia Southern hosts West Georgia Sept. 8 for the season opener.
