Boys athlete of the week
Farris elevates the Panthers
MARIO 2 col col
Portal junior forward Mario Farris averaged 20 points per game in two wins over SEB this week.
Mario Farris started the rematch between Southeast Bulloch and Portal with a bang. After SEB won the opening tip, Farris stepped in front of a pass and took the ball the other direction, finishing with a one-handed slam to bring the Panther faithful to their feet. Portal would go on to beat the Yellow Jackets for the second time in as many tries, improving its record to 2-0. "It was a good game," said Farris, a junior. "We had a lot of teamwork." Farris would score 17 points until the game was called due to floor issues in the third quarter. In Portal's two wins over SEB, Farris averaged 20 points. "He's an aggressive low-post player that's very athletic," said PHS head coach Jeff Brannen. "He can block shots and rebound and score in the post. Plus he runs the floor so well it just makes him an all-around good player." Farris said the wins over SEB were good, but there's still room for improvement. He said the Panthers need to work on their defense and rotation on offense, while he needs to improve his ball handling skills.
