An elderly woman died Sunday in a house fire on Lane Street in Brooklet, said Bulloch County Public Safety Director Ted Wynn.

Francis McElveen, 85, Lane Street, died in the blaze that consumed the house, said Bulloch County Deputy Coroner Chuck Francis.

Wynn said Brooklet Police officers were first to arrive at the scene around noon Sunday, but the fire was so hot, and the structure so involved, they could not enter. Brooklet Volunteer firefighters arrived shortly afterward, but were unable to save McElveen, he said.

Bulloch County Fire Chief Randy Walker said the blaze originated in the kitchen, possibly on the stovetop. However, the investigation is still ongoing and the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, he said.

McElveen's body was sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of her death and to discover whether a medical event possibly occurred before the fire, he said.

Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch said the results of the toxicology and other autopsy procedures could take up to three months.

No one else was in the home during the fire, Wynn said.
