A teen who was arrested in early May on statutory rape charges is back in jail after a second offense with the same girl, said Portal police Chief Jason Sapp.
Matthew Dean Norris, 18, of Old Portal Road in Portal, had been out on bond “a couple of weeks” after being jailed for the May 3 arrest on charges that he had sexual encounters at Portal Middle/High School with a 14-year-old girl when he reportedly committed the crime again.
Sapp said that Norris met with the girl after his release, and the two, who claimed to be dating and “in love,” had sex again May 29.
The first known encounters took place in the school bathrooms. The two would text each other during class and arrange to meet, then give their teachers reasons for leaving class such as needing to go to the restroom or to see the school nurse, he said.
The teenage girl told her friends, rumors began circulating, and the girl’s grandmother confronted her about a “hickey” on her neck, Sapp said.
Upon the girl’s confession, the grandmother went to the school and summoned Sapp regarding the issue, he said.
After the May 29 incident, the grandmother contacted Sapp again. Norris was arrested a second time, and the girl was sent for counseling.
“They both said they were in love,” but because Norris is 18 and the girl involved was 14, the encounters are considered illegal and subject to statutory rape charges, Sapp said on Friday.
A motion to revoke Norris’ bond from the initial arrest is filed to be heard in court June 15, according to Bulloch County Jail records.
