I have been blessed with moments to remember during my two careers in Statesboro. My 33 years in a wonderful relationship with Georgia Southern College. The second being a decade of continued challenge as an officer for Southeastern Marketing and President Roy Akins.
With Southern, my magical moment was that rainy Friday night in May ’81 when the great one, Erk, slid into the front seat of my car.
That second special moment took place in the early 1990s, when a handsome young man stopped off at Roy’s about finding an affordable location for the “best chicken menu ever!” We chatted a few minutes with his telling me his plan to complement his food establishment in his hometown of Athens. His quest was to find something affordable here.
I mentioned to him the ancient shed — a building across from Dingus McGee’s!
He stood up. Shook my hand. Thanked me for my time and tip and walked into the south Georgia sunshine.
His name was Zach McLeroy and he had a friend named Tony Townley.
They had a dream named Zaxby’s!
