No injuries were reported after a Bulloch County school bus caught fire Thursday afternoon, forcing the driver to evacuate.
Hayley Greene, public relations and marketing specialist for the school system, said the bus driver had dropped off her last rider about 4:15 p.m., completing her normal afternoon route when she noticed smoke coming from the dash. The driver immediately notified the school transportation office and stopped and exited the bus at the intersection of Lane Road and W. Waters Road in the Clito community.
The Statesboro Fire Department responded quickly to the scene, but the bus was soon engulfed in flames and completely burned up. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation, Greene said.
Greene said all school buses undergo regular inspections and maintenance and all bus drivers check their vehicles daily.
“Obviously, this is an unusual incident,” Greene said. “The driver did exactly as she was trained to do in quickly stopping the bus and evacuating.”
Greene said a substitute bus will be used on the route Friday, and students will see the normal number on the substitute bus indicating that it’s the bus they should ride.
