Ricky Lane recently became the first dentist in Statesboro to be certified by the American Academy of Facial Esthetics to administer Botox and dermal fillers. The Academy is the leader in providing training courses for doctors, dentists, nurses and other healthcare providers in the area of facial aesthetics.
"These additional services make sense in my practice because as oral physicians, we are dealing with not only teeth function and restoration of dentition, but patients' oral esthetics and their smiles. So now I am able to provide the patients with what they need and what they are looking for," he said.
Lane said that many of his patients have problems associated with hyperactivity of certain muscles in the jaw that can cause pain, which in turn can lead to chronic migraines.
"By administering Botox injections, these muscle groups relax and the patient can obtain superior therapeutic results," he said.
Lane said he believes the addition to his practice was a natural fit.
"Since dentists already have extensive training and knowledge of the muscle and skeletal makeup of the face and neck area, this exciting area of dentistry allows me to continue meet patients' needs in the area of cosmetic dentistry," he said.
Lane also is certified to inject dermal fillers, which are commonly used by dentists for high lip line cases (gummy smiles) or uneven lips.
"Basically, dermal fillers allow us to make the smile area as aesthetically beautiful as possible," he said.
I asked Lane if he thinks the practice of dentistry is going to move as a whole to providing patients with a more comprehensive approach to their overall health care.
"Absolutely, I think it gives me more options to treat patients and provide them with what they need," he said. "This is a very exciting time in our field."
So, until next Tuesday, I bid you au revoir.
