A Bulloch County high school student suffered no injuries after jumping from the back of a school bus Wednesday morning.

According to a release from Hayley Greene, public relations director for the school district, the incident occurred about 6:30 a.m. during the school system’s regular morning bus routes.

“A high school student jumped from the back of a moving school bus,” Greene said in the release. “The bus was traveling at a speed of approximately 5 mph at the time.”
After jumping from the bus, Greene said the student ran from the scene, “but was quickly located and is now with parent.”
Greene said emergency medical services and law enforcement responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

On Feb. 29, a Bulloch County middle school student had to be airlifted to a Savannah hospital after jumping out the back door of a moving school bus while it was traveling on the Statesboro bypass.

That student was treated for severe head trauma and has returned home.

State regulations require the rear door of school buses to be unlocked so they can be accessible in case of an emergency from both inside and outside a bus, Greene said.

Also, if a rear door is not fully closed, a school bus will not crank. Additionally, an alarm will sound immediately if the door is opened while the bus is moving.
