LEXINGTON, Ky. — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has honored Georgia Southern's volleyball program with the AVCA Team Academic Award. The Eagles were one of two Southern Conference teams and 102 NCAA Division I squads to receive the award for the 2011-12 season after posting a 3.42 team grade-point average.
“It is a testament to the hard work the kids put in off the court,” GSU coach Chad Callihan said. “We tried to create a culture of excellence, both athletically and academically, and the kids have bought in and worked hard.”
The AVCA honored a record 533 teams across all divisions of college volleyball and high school volleyball.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
