Statesboro police arrested a former Georgia Southern University basketball player on robbery charges.
Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said Detective Ben Purvis arrested Tyrone Brown Jr., 19, of Millen, on Monday afternoon, after an incident at Willow Bend Apartments last week.
Brown and another man lured a male victim into his apartment on pretense of playing video games. According to police reports, once the victim was inside the apartment, Brown and the other man attacked the victim, taking a wallet from his pocket, which contained identification and a small amount of cash.
Brown and the other offender pushed the victim out of the apartment afterward, and after a period of time, the victim called 911. Responding police officers noted visible injuries, but the victim declined medical treatment, reports stated.
Purvis began an investigation which led to Brown’s arrest. Other arrests are possible, Turner said.
According to a Georgia Southern official, Brown was dismissed from the GSU men's basketball team Wednesday for academic ineligibility.
The sophomore reserve forward played in 30 games as a freshman and averaged 2.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game during the 2011-12 season.
Brown is being held without bond in the Bulloch County Jail.
