DURHAM, N.C. — Georgia Southern baseball player Chase Griffin has been named a second team Freshman All-American by Baseball America. It is the third Freshman All-American team on which the rising sophomore has been named.
Griffin, a catcher, finished GSU's 2012 season with a team-best 10 home runs. The Leesburg native was second on the team with a .320 batting average and 42 runs batted in.
Griffin got off to a slow start and hit just .152 with one home run in the first 17 games but he broke out for three hits and four RBIs on March 17 against UNC Greensboro. Griffin went on to hit a team-best .413 with nine homers and 24 RBIs over the next 21 games.
Griffin received postseason honors in June from both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball. He is the first freshman since Eric Phillips, and the only GSU catcher, to receive Freshman All-American honors.
