Phillip Monroe Volkert, born on the 24th of June in the year of 1944, who believed in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, was called home on Sunday, August 16, 2026. He passed peacefully surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.
Phillip was born and raised in Miles City, Montana.
He loved the great outdoors, including fishing, hunting and working in his woodshop.
After high school, he pursued a career in the military, starting with the Navy, then transferring to the Army. Phillip was a highly-decorated soldier. He served as an 18D Special Forces medic, having completed his first combat mission in The Republic of Congo, Central Africa, and two tours of Vietnam, serving with 5th, 7th and 10th Group.
He was awarded three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars and numerous other accommodation medals.
After his time with Special Forces, he continued his career at Fort Sam Houston, Brook Army Hospital Burn Center. There, he served as a 91C/LVN (licensed vocational nurse), 91V/a licensed respiratory therapist and as a 91B flight paramedic.
Phillip flew all over the United States caring for the most severe burn patients. In 1979, he was chosen to attend a physician's assistant program through the United States Air Force. During Phillip’s internship at Ft. Bliss, he was selected to care for Gen. Omar Bradley (retired).
Phillip went on to serve as a physician’s assistant in Germany and ending his active-duty career with the 82nd Airborne Division. After completing 26 years of active duty, Phillip continued to serve and ran a rural clinic in his home state of Montana and after two years, returned to serve as a Department of Defense employee at Ft. Campbell emergency room and finally ending his service serving as a flight surgeon for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment/Night Stalkers at Fort Campbell.
Phillip truly embraced his calling as a soldier, leader and healer. He was always prepared and ready to serve wherever he was called and needed, no questions asked.
Phillip has answered his final and greatest call to duty, continuing his service as a soldier in God’s eternal kingdom, a mission he spent his life preparing for and considered the most honorable of all. Now, he hears the words he longed to hear, “Well done, My good and faithful servant. Matt 25:21.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Pam Volkert, of nearly 60 years of marriage; his children, Phillip (Deanne), Mathew (Carlett), Tanya, Aaron (Karen); eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Family meant everything to Phillip and he was so proud of his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. He was always available with words of encouragement and wisdom.
