Street naming, ‘Creek’ contract on Statesboro City Council agenda Tuesday

The naming of a previously unnamed street and an almost $460,000 design contract related to the Creek on the Blue Mile project are on Statesboro City Council’s agenda for the 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1 regular meeting.

As reported last week, the proposal to name the short street between East Cherry Street and East Vine Street behind City Hall for a Revolutionary War veteran, Lt. Col Nicholas Anciaux, was presented during a previous mayor-and-council work session.

Born in France, Anciaux served with French forces allied with Gen. George Washington’s Continental Army at the Battle of Yorktown, then settled in Savannah and what became Bulloch County, receiving a land grant near Mill Creek in 1807. He died in 1810 and was reported to have been buried on his Bulloch County property.

Tuesday’s agenda includes a public hearing followed by an opportunity for the council to act on the street naming.

Council is also expected to act on the $459,895 contract for EMC Engineering Services to provide engineering design services for the Creek on the Blue Mile Multi-Use Trail project, funded by a Transportation Alternative Grant and the T-SPLOST, or local transportation-purpose sales tax.

Those are two of just five business items on the agenda.

As usual, the meeting will be held in the council chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 50 East Vine St.
