David Hodges, right, reminisces about the turpentine industry with David King in the Bobby Ronald Newton Turpentine Museum during the 45th annual Catface Turpentine Festival in Portal on Saturday, Oct. 3. Hodges, whose family was in the turpentine business; King, of the Georgia Museum of Agriculture; and retired Georgia Forestry Commission ranger Doug Chassereau, background left, once ran the still and demonstrated how to produce turpentine at the festival in years past when pine gum was readily available. Intermittent rain did little to dampen the fun at Portal’s 45th annual Catface Turpentine Festival on Saturday, Oct. 3. Visitors explored the town’s turpentine history at the Bobby Ronald Newton Turpentine Museum and enjoyed food, entertainment and community throughout the day.
