The suspect in the double homicide Feb. 29 at the Days Inn in Statesboro was captured Wednesday night by the U.S. Marshals Service.
According to a release Thursday morning from Capt. Jared Akins with the Statesboro Police Department, “Investigators with the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Force located and arrested Kentaevious Davis at a residence in Tattnall County.”
Arrest warrants for the 20-year-old Davis of Glennville were sworn out March 1 charging him with two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the killings of Jamaryce Mincey and Christopher Joyce at the Days Inn.
After receiving the information of Davis’ arrest, SPD detectives traveled to Tattnall County and served a search warrant for evidence at the residence Davis was found, Akins said. He said the detectives were assisted by investigators with the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Office.
Davis was transported to the Bulloch County Jail where he remains pending further judicial action.
When arrest warrants were issued March 1, Akins said Davis was “at large and should be considered armed and dangerous. He is believed to have fled the Statesboro/Bulloch County area.”
On Wednesday, Police Chief Mike Broadhead said the search for Davis was turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service.
“SPD would like to thank its partners with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case,” Akins said.
Mincey, 23, of Green St. in Statesboro, and Joyce, 20, formerly of McDonough, were found dead about 8:30 p.m. Feb. 29 after Days Inn management did a welfare check in their room.
Broadhead said there were three other men in the room when the shooting occurred. Two of the men both said the third man – the primary suspect – shot the two men.
After initially thinking there may have been an exchange of gunfire, Broadhead said the two victims did not fire their weapons, though they were both armed, he said.
Broadhead said police do not know at this time what instigated the shooting.
Also, police believe a woman picked the three men up after the shooting and took them from the scene. Broadhead said the woman, whose name has not been released, has been charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers.
Broadhead said detectives are following a “slow, meticulous process” in determining what happened.
He said the Days Inn does have video surveillance cameras that detectives are reviewing to glean any information about the incident.
Chief Broadhead said there were no “obvious” signs of contraband in the room and wouldn’t speculate if other illegal activity led to the shootings.
