Southeast Bulloch head coach Jason Anthony got his first win as a head coach Friday, but it didn’t come easy. The Jackets had a back-and-forth battle with East Laurens that was finally decided in overtime with a big play from the defense, and a game-winning touchdown to seal the deal.
“The whole game we could have folded when things went bad, but we found a way to fight back and eventually won in overtime,” Anthony said. It took all three phases of the game to win as we scored on offense, defense and special teams. Our special teams kicked us into overtime and then in overtime our defense created a turnover, and then our offense scored to win the game.”
Anthony saw many areas of growth and felt one of the biggest changes that helped with the win Friday was going back to last year’s defensive scheme.
“I think we tried to get a little cute on defense in the first week against Statesboro and it didn’t work,” Anthony said. “We got back to our regular stuff defensively and played with leverage and our coverage was really good. It is something our players and coaches are more comfortable with and we will be continuing this going forward.”
The Jackets played Statesboro in week one and now take on a team that just lost to the Blue Devils in Burke County Friday in Waynesboro. Burke County is led by Mykheal Smith who had two touchdowns and over 100 yards of offense against Statesboro Friday night. The Bears are 1-1 and coming off a loss Anthony knows they will be tough to beat Friday.
"They opened the season with a 30-15 win against Greenbrier and then last week played tough but lost to Statesboro,” Anthony said. “Franklin Stephens is a great coach and he will have his team ready. They have a couple backs that are tough and fast and we will need to try and contain them. They also have some talent on defense and we know we will have to limit our mistakes and try and break some big plays on offense in order to come out of there with a win."
Southeast Bulloch and Burke County are set for a 7:30 start Friday in Waynesboro.
