Man files false stolen car report after fleeing from traffic stop
Suspect facing multiple charges
Jerry Travis Mikell

A man who fled during a traffic stop Tuesday reported his car stolen an hour later in an attempt to avoid arrest, said interim Statesboro police Chief Robert Bryan.
Officer Dustin Lanier stopped a vehicle around 7 p.m. Tuesday after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at Blitch and Denmark streets, he said. “…the driver fled on foot and was unable to be located.” Lanier had the vehicle towed, he said.
About an hour later, Lanier responded to a report of a vehicle being stolen from a residence on Donaldson Street and discovered “the vehicle reported stolen was the same vehicle from the traffic stop an hour earlier,” Bryan said. “Also, the resident who reported the vehicle stolen, Jerry Travis Mikell, matched the description of the driver that fled on foot.”
Through further investigation Mikell, 32,  of Donaldson Street, was arrested for obstruction, false report of a crime, fleeing/attempt to elude, stop sign violation and suspended license, he said.
