Statesboro United Methodist churches are uniting to welcome one of Statesboro’s own back home. For three nights, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, Bishop Sharma D. Lewis Logan will lead a “Coming Home Revival.”

Attendees will gather at a different church each night for refreshments, fellowship and a worship service with activities for the kids. Statesboro First UMC will host on Sept. 29, Pittman Park UMC will host on Sept. 30 and Brannen Chapel UMC will host on Oct. 1.

Rev. Dr. Jonathan Smith, pastor at Pittman Park UMC said, “Three nights of preaching will not solve every challenge in our community. But three nights of standing in one another’s sanctuaries, singing one another’s songs, and hearing the gospel proclaimed by a daughter of this community might begin to loosen something

“Revival, in the Wesleyan tradition, was never mainly about a feeling. It was about a people being renewed and made ready to live out their faith.”

The legacy of Lewis

Bishop Lewis Logan is well-known in Statesboro as the daughter of influential community leaders Althea and Charlie Lewis. She graduated from Statesboro High School in 1981, and her older siblings helped integrate local schools in the 1970s.

Lewis Logan attended Brannen Chapel UMC with her family, and she credits James Swanson Sr., a pastor at the church, as an influential mentor. Swanson later became bishop of the UMC Mississippi Conference, the position Lewis Logan now holds herself.

Featured music

Each night, the worship service will begin with music from featured performers. Georgia Southern University’s gospel choir will open the service Sept. 29 at Statesboro First UMC. On Sept. 30 at Pittman Park UMC, the Chancel Choir will feature selections from their recent “Old Time Gospel Sing” event. The Brannen Chapel Choir will lead worship for the revival’s final night Oct. 1.

Kids camp

While their parents attend worship services, children in grades pre-K through fifth grade are invited to attend “Power Camp.” Each night of Power Camp will focus on a different theme: fire, wind and water. Rev. Stephanie Smith, Family Ministries Pastor at Pittman Park UMC, will reveal how each element shows up in the book of Acts. Camp will welcome a different expert each night: a fireman, hot air balloon pilot and scuba diver.

A nursery will be provided for infants and toddlers.
