A Georgia Southern University student collapsed in class Thursday morning and later died, the university said in a statement Thursday afternoon.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine why he died Thursday morning after collapsing while attending class in the College of Business Administration building.
Cory Wilson, 21, a junior management major from Savannah, was “immediately transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead,” Georgia Southern spokesman Christian Flathman said.
Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch said Wilson collapsed in class and bystanders performed CPR until Bulloch County EMS arrived.
“The cause of death has not been determined, but a preliminary investigation revealed no signs of foul play,” Flathman said.
Futch said there were no outward signs indicating the cause of death, and Wilson had no significant medical history that would indicate possible causes of death.
After EMS arrived and continued resuscitation efforts, Wilson was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, he said.
Flathman said counseling services for students who may need them after their classmate’s death are being made available through the University’s Counseling and Career Development Center.
“The entire Georgia Southern family is deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”
