Tuesday tilt for SEB and Beach

It’s a rare Tuesday night high school football game as the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets welcome the Beach Bulldogs to Fred Shaver Field Tuesday night in Brooklet for a key region matchup, and a possible state playoff berth.

The Jackets knocked off winless Groves 49-7 last Thursday in Garden City, as they snapped a three game losing streak. The Jackets piled up over 300 yards of offense on the ground, and with a 42-0 halftime lead, were able to rest many of the starters as they close the season with three games in eight days.

“It was good to be able to score some points, and get some defensive stops Thursday,” said Southeast Bulloch coach Barrett Davis. “It was really good to just get a win, as it had been a month since we won a game, considering we had a bye week, and then three straight losses. I think we are currently in a good state of mind.”

The playoff scenario is pretty good for the Yellow Jackets. Southeast Bulloch currently stands 3-3 in region play with two games left. Tuesday the Jackets play Beach, who is currently 4-2 in region play. The Jackets wrap up the season Friday in Savannah against Johnson, who is 2-5 in the region.

If Southeast Bulloch can beat Beach and Johnson they could be the number three seed in the state playoffs. They would also need Islands to beat Windsor Forest. If the Jackets were to lose to Beach, and then beat Johnson they could end in a tie with Islands and Windsor Forest, if Islands wins Friday. Southeast Bulloch would win the tiebreaker because head to head would be a wash, and then the second tiebreaker is record against other AAA schools. The Jackets are the only one of those three teams with a win against a AAA school, as they beat Tattnall 35-7. If the Knights beat Islands SEB would have to beat Beach and Johnson to earn the fourth seed.

“We control our own destiny at this point,” Davis said. “If we beat Beach and Johnson we are in the state playoffs. If we can do that and Islands beats Windsor Forest we are the three seed, that is our best possible outcome, but the first thing is we have to beat Beach Tuesday.”

The Bulldogs are a much better team than the one the Jackets beat 42-7 last year. The Bulldogs are averaging over 27 points per game. Beach is currently 4-2 in the region, and one of their losses was a 50-43 shoot out with Benedictine last Friday.

“They had the ball on the two yard line with a chance to score as time expired last Thursday,” Davis said. “They have a couple great athletes who can score at any time in running back Antwan Bynes, and quarterback Jaylen Wells. They are also pretty athletic on the defensive side of the ball, so it will be a tough task.”

Bynes accounted for over 400 yards of offense by himself against Benedictine. He had 280 rushing yards, and 119 receiving yards, to go along with four touchdowns in their loss to the Cadets.

“They have plenty of athletes,” Davis said. “They are aggressive on defense, but I feel we are much improved on both sides of the ball, and we get this game at home which is huge. We have a lot to play for, we have to be able to tackle on defense, and sustain drives on offense in order to be successful.”

The Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs are scheduled for a 7:00 kickoff Tuesday night in Brooklet.
