When Tormenta 2 takes the field in Columbia, S.C. on Saturday evening, it will be in control of its own destiny.
Tormenta 2 trailed the Dalton Red Wolves 2-1 at press time with the match mired in a lightning delay, but the Statesboro squad can do no worse than traveling to the rival S.C. United Bantams this weekend with both squads tied atop the Deep South Division standings. A win would clinch a second consecutive division title outright for Tormenta while even a draw would secure the division crown via tiebreakers.
The Bantams have handed Tormenta 2 its only loss in USL League Two play to date with a 2-0 decision in a June 11 match that was moved from Statesboro to Savannah due to soggy field conditions.
Two weeks later, Tormenta returned the favor, crushing S.C. United by a count of 3-0 on its home pitch to vault Tormenta back to the top of the table.
One more bit of drama exists due to the uncertain nature of Tuesday's match in Dalton. Regardless of who wins the division on Saturday, Tormenta needs to secure at least one point from either Dalton or S.C. United to guarantee a second straight trip to the Southern Conference playoffs.
Last season, Tormenta ran through the regular season with an unbeaten record and earned the right to host the playoffs, only to see its season end on its home pitch with its only league loss.
