REIDSVILLE — The Southeast Bulloch softball team took second place in the Glenville Bank and Trust Tournament this weekend in Tattnall County.
On Friday, the Yellow Jackets (4-2) beat Appling County 4-3 in nine innings. Lauren Crosby drove in Nira Byrd for the game-winner. Pitcher Megan Barnwell struck out 17.
Southeast lost to Vidalia in Game Two, 2-1. Barnwell had 11 K’s.
On Saturday, SEB beat Long County 14-8 with Dierdre Delvin getting the win on the mound. The Jackets got a good pitching performance from Ashley Clifton in the next game, topping Tattnall County 10-2.
Southeast then completed in the sweep of Aplling with a 3-0 win in eight innings. Vidalia proved to be too tough again, finishing off SEB, 9-6.
Ansley Rushing, Clifton, Crosby and Barnwell were all named to the All-Tournament team.
SCHS wins Silver Bracket
SAVANNAH — The Screven County softball team won the Silver Bracket Saturday in Savannah in tournament play after going 1-1 in pool play, then 2-0 in elimination play.
The Gamecocks (4-1) started the tourney off by beating Calvary Day 5-4. Savannah Christian sent SCHS to the Silver Bracket with a 4-2 win.
The Gamecocks then beat Johnson 15-5 and Calvary 11-1.
Pitcher Marla Thompson pitched 20 innings, striking out 17 and allowing just two runs in her outings.
Lovie Sheppard was 6-for-11, Courtney Burns was 5-for-9 with five RBIs, Lauren Thomas was 4-for-9 with four RBIs, Syndee Weaver was 5-for-12 and Krystal Harris drove in four. Burns also pitched three innings.
Screven will christen its brand new softball facility Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. when they host Appling County.
BA drops game to TCS
DUBLIN — Bulloch Academy gave up four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and couldn’t come back from the deficit, suffering an 8-6 loss against nemesis Trinity Christian School Thursday.
The Lady Gators (4-3) had a 3-1 lead going into the inning.
“We started off generating runs and playing good defense,” said BA head coach Chandler Dennard. “In the fourth, we just had a couple of mental lapses and it led to a big inning for them. We just didn’t make the routine plays. I was real pleased, though, with the way the girls bounced back in the top of the fifth.”
Bulloch scored three runs to cut the advantage to 7-6 but couldn’t retake the lead.
Kelcie Jacobs was the losing pitcher. Leading hitters for Bulloch were Kaylee Dennard (2-for-2) and Kaylee Lanier (2-for-4).
In the following B-team game, which was the first-ever for the Lady Gators, Bulloch took a 7-5 victory.
With the score tied 5-5 in the top of the fifth and runners on second and third, Ally Cheshire blasted a single up the middle to plate Rebekah White and Sally Marie Futch for the eventual game-winning runs.
Lauren Dennard was the winning pitcher. Other offensive leaders for Bulloch were White, Futch, Amelia Akins and Marianna Peebles.
Bulloch Academy will be back in action next Tuesday against Pinewood Christian Academy in Bellville. First pitch for varsity is slated for 4:30 p.m. with the B-team game to follow.
BA JV whips FBOH
Bulloch Academy's junior varsity softball season got off with a bang last Monday as the Lady Gators blasted First Presbyterian of Hinesville 19-1 in three innings.
Mary Margaret Reeves and Ashlee Lanier paced the offense for Bulloch (1-0) while Lauren Dennard and Marianna Peebles took turns on the hill for the Lady Gators.
The Lady Gators host Thomas Jefferson Academy on Thursdya. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
SHS season tickets on sale Monday
Season tickets for Statesboro High football games go on sale Monday at the campus.
Season tickets for both reserved and general admission seating will be on sale in the front office beginning at 8:30 a.m. Statesboro plays six home games this season at Womack Field and the season opener is Aug. 29 against Josey.
Little Eagles Camp
On Saturday Georgia Southern University football will again offer the Little Eagles Camp followed by 'Meet the Eagles' presented by Trapnell Dodge. The event will take place at Paulson Stadium.
Head football coach Chris Hatcher, his staff and players will offer the Little Eagles Camp in the morning. Sign up will take place from 9-9:45 a.m. for children ages 4-12 and the event is free. Little Eagles Camp will run from 9:45-10:45 as campers will participate in various football drills.
Following the Little Eagles Camp, the public is invited to Bishop Field House for 'Meet the Eagles' presented by Trapnell Dodge. This will be the first chance to get the 2008 schedule posters and fans can get autographs and their picture taken with members of the Eagle Football program.
Fans can also purchase football season tickets, the 2008 football media guides and the University Store will be on hand to sell Georgia Southern merchandise, all while meeting GUS and the cheerleaders.

SHS Hall of Fame nominations
The Statesboro Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for the 2008 induction. A nominee must be a graduate of Statesboro High School, William James High School, or Marvin Pittman. In order to be considered, one must be an alumnus from one of these institutions for at least fifteen years.
A nominee will be considered in the following areas: high school athletic participation; high school athletic awards, records, and recognitions; college athletic participation; college athletic awards, records, recognitions, and scholarships; high school and college non-athletic extracurriculuar activities; accomplishments after high school and/or college (contributions to community); leadership and character.
