BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (9-12) trailed at the half, but James Scott (31 points, 10 rebounds) carried his team into the second as it knocked off the Claxton Tigers 79-52 in non-region play Tuesday.
The Jackets were behind 35-34 after Claxton sank seven 3-pointers in the first half but exploded in the third to outscore the Tigers 28-4 in the period. Scott knocked down 11 of his 31 in the stretch and grabbed three rebounds, two steals and had two assists in the run.
“(Scott played) three quarters, mainly a great third quarter just to get us ignited, get us going” said SEB coach John Page. “He really got us going in the first half, in the second quarter coming back. Great leadership from him tonight. He put everybody on his coattail, and I think everybody kind of grabbed on it and took off a little bit. We needed it in the first half.”
After jumping ahead to an 8-2 lead, the Jacket defense let up, allowing three lead changes in the first and losing the lead at the end of the frame when Cory Greene sank the second of his three triples to put the Tigers up 17-15 heading into the second. They were able to preserve the lead, taking a one-point advantage into the locker room.
“I told them at halftime,” Page said, “I said, ‘Now you can let some of the air out of your heads and get back to earth a little bit.’ We knew (Claxton) was going to fight to the wire. We knew they could shoot the ball extremely well and they did. They shot the ball extremely well in the first half and kept us in a bind. I think primarily we went to the trap on defense and got the steals.”
Southeast Bulloch snagged five steals in the third and out-rebounded the Tigers 12-3 in the period. The Jackets finished the game with 16 steals.
SEB saw 12 different players get on the scoreboard in the contest. Scott led the scoring explosion, and Anthony Cope added 15 points, including three 3s for SEB.
Claxton had three players reach double-digits. Tristian McCoy led the Tigers with 13 points and Greene sank 11. Chris Bellamy had a double-double, adding 10 rebounds to his 10 points.
Southeast Bulloch returns to action when they host region rival Jefferson County Friday. The action starts at 6 p.m.

Lady Tigers 53,
Lady Yellow Jackets 47
Lacreasha Brewton knocked down 23 points for Claxton as the Tigers got their third win of the season, a 53-47 victory over the struggling Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets.
The Jackets scored the game’s first nine points before Claxton’s Kris Johnson broke the 7:43 scoring drought with a layup. The Tigers missed their first nine shot attempts of the first quarter, and the Jackets took a 14-4 lead.
Ashley Clifton led the Jackets with a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds), but the Tigers were able to adapt to her post play and take her out of the game.
“We were getting pretty good shots (in the beginning) but we couldn’t get anything in,” said Claxton coach Laura Aziz. “We did make an adjustment with (Clifton) in the short corner. We weren’t defending it right. We tried to fix that before the half, and we made some more adjustments at halftime.”
The Tigers bounced back in the following period, led by Brewton’s 10 second-quarter points and outscored SEB 21-6 for a 25-20 lead.
“We got lazy on defense in the (second quarter),” said Southeast Bulloch coach Mark Smith. “They started passing the ball quickly and hitting our weak side and we didn’t make the adjustments. We told them to watch out for (Brewton) and we just got away from it.”
Brewton added five assists and six steals to her 23 points, and Daneesha Grant joined her in double digits with 11 points.
Clifton’s 16 led SEB while Kacey Jones knocked down 12.
