Region tournaments get underway today around the area, with four local teams beginning their run towards a state tournament berth tonight.
Statesboro (12-11) will face Brunswick tonight at 6 p.m. at SHS. The Blue Devils are the No. 2 seed out of the North Division after falling on the road at the Academy of Richmond County on Friday.
Brunswick is the No. 3 seed out of the South.
The Devils have lost two straight entering the postseason. The Pirates come to Statesboro at 3-17.
Elsewhere, Screven County faces Westside in Louisville. Jefferson County is the host site for the Region 3-AA tournament for both the boys and the girls.
The Gamecocks (17-8) captured the league’s fourth seed. A win over the Patriots tonight at 5:30 p.m. clinches a state tourney berth for them.
Antrjuan Albright passed the 1,500 point-mark and Dajuwan Carter passed the 1,000-point mark last week for SCHS.
Also, Metter (6-18), winless this year in region play, will face No. 1 seed Josey tonight at 8:30 p.m.
In girls’ action, Southeast Bulloch (4-18) draws No. 1 seed Laney. They’ll face off at 7 p.m.
The Statesboro Lady Blue Devils (19-3) will host Ware County Wednesday at 6 p.m. at SHS. Statesboro is the North Division’s No. 1 seed while Ware comes in as No. 4 out of the South. A win guarantees the Lady Devils a spot in the state tournament.
The remainder of the tournament will be played at Glynn Academy, as the Red Terrors won the region’s South Division.
Statesboro clinched the regular season championship with a 39-34 win over the Academy of Richmond County Friday in Augusta. They warmed up for tonight by beating Portal 70-35 on Saturday. The Lady Gators ar 8-13.
Wednesday also marks the beginning of the Region 3-A tournament. Emanuel County Institute will be the host for all contests. The Claxton girls play ECI at 4 p.m. with the Jenkins County boys facing Savannah Country Day immediately after.
In Region 3-AA on Wednesday, the Southeast Bulloch boys (10-14, No. 7 seed) will play Swainsboro while the SCHS Lady Gamecocks (16-7, No. 2 seed) draw Metter.
On Thursday, the Claxton boys will play Calvary Day at 7:30 p.m.. The winner gets the right to play Portal (24-1). Jenkins County’s girls will face Portal at 6 p.m.
Finally, on Friday, both Bulloch Academy teams will be in action in Dublin at Trinity Christian School. The Lady Gators (No. 2 seed) will face Frederica at 5:30 while the boys (No. 1 seed) will face the winner of Frederica/Trinity at 7p.m. Both Gator teams have qualified for state.
At 8:30, Portal will get back to work against the winner of Claxton/Calvary Day. The Panthers’ regular season region championship gave them a bye in the first round and automatically gave them a berth into the state tournament.
The top fours team that advance through the preliminary rounds earn state tournament berths. Championship and consolation games will decided seeding.
