BROOKLET — The Savannah Christian Raiders (10-1, 4-0) scored early and often Tuesday as they knocked off Southeast Bulloch 9-0 in an Area 3-A/AA matchup at Fred Shaver Field.
The Yellow Jackets are off to a 2-6 start under first-year head coach Kent Brannen, but have seen improvement since the start of the season.
“The effort they gave (against the Raiders) was incredible,” Brannen said. “That was our goal for (yesterday’s) game — effort. If we can put fourth and give 100-percent every game, the wins will come.”
The Raiders were on the attack throughout the contest, out-shooting SEB 37-3, and Jacket keeper Jason Smith was kept busy in front of the net, tallying 11 saves on the evening.
The closest Southeast Bulloch came to getting on the scoreboard were scoring attempts by Joel Rubio and David Chambers.
The Raiders were led in scoring by Tyler Hooks, who finished the contest with five goals and an assist. His final goal in the 54th minute gave SCPS a nine-goal advantage, and allowed the Raiders to sub in fresh legs across the board. The No. 4 team in the state attributes much of its success to its deep roster.
“We’re fortunate that we have a lot of depth,” said Savannah Christian coach Ashley Barnwell, “being able to play folks and not necessarily fall off a lot. We appreciated that Southeast Bulloch hustled very well. They didn’t quit the entire 80 minutes.”
Raider keeper Jamie Lindley, who was placed on offense in the second half, added two goals of his own, and Michael Wolverton and Zach Cowart each scored once. Wolverton also had two assists.
Cowart, Josh Ball and Matt Ball each helped out the Raiders with an assist.
Southeast Bulloch has a tough stretch of area competition. After coming off the SCPS game — the first area game of the season for the Jackets — it will take on Metter on Thursday and Savannah Country Day on Saturday.
Brannen looks forward to the future of the soccer Jackets, having made some changes in his first year that he feels will help the program grow.
“This is our first year with a JV program,” Brannen said. “We’re trying to start something new here and build a foundation.”
